Origin of Name: Father Nivard Volkmer was born in 1919 near Banja Luka in Bosnia. At the age of eleven, he moved to the boarding school at Mariastern Abbey with the intent of becoming a monk. “It was there that I started learning the ways of Trappist life,” he said. “I am now completely convinced that all goodness stems from inner peace, from silence.” In 1944 he was made a priest but was then displaced by the turmoil of war. In 1951 he settled at Engelszell Abbey, where he held various offices, including 2 years as the Superior. In 1991 he was called back to Banja Luka to direct the abbey he grew up in, and he served until 2002, when he was able to leave the trials of life behind and return “home” to Engelszell. He remained there until September 2014, when he passed on to his heavenly home. His many years of service have earned him the honor of being the namesake of this Trappist beer.

Released in 2014, this beer was originally brewed and sold under the name “Jubiläumsbier” in honor of the 250th anniversary of the dedication of their church. NIVARD, a blond beer in the style of a Patersbier or refectory ale (similar to Chimay Doree or Petite Orval). Nivard is the most sessionable of the Engelszell Trappist beers at just 5.5% ABV. Similar in character to a triple but with lower alcohol content.

Tasting Notes:

Style: Single. Patersbier/ refectory ale.

Color: golden/ yellow.

Nose: intense fruity notes. Malts (cookie). Citrus/ floral (hops).

Palate: Citric, clean. Caramel, fruit. Creamy texture.

Hops: Mühlviertler Spalter Select, Mühlviertler Aurora, Mühlviertler Magnum, Mühlviertler Saphir

1919年,出生於波斯尼亞,「Nivard Volkmer|尼瓦」,11歲時就以朝向成為修道士為心願,進入了「Mariastern」修道院學習,在此,他開始相信:『所有的善都來自內心的平和與靜默』,1944年,授予為牧師,但旋即遭受戰亂坡及而流離;直到1951年時來到了「Stift-Engelszell|天使聖地」修道院,並在這裡履歷了許多職務,包括2年的院長職位。1991年,因故鄉修道院的召請而不得不離開,直到2002年再度返回心中真正家-「天使聖地」修道院,並在20149月長眠於此。

很有趣的,在2014年推出,原本用「Jubiläumsbier|週年啤酒」為名,慶祝修道院250周年的限定款啤酒,在「尼瓦」過世後, 改以其命名,風格是比利時淡色麥酒,與奇美金啤酒(Doree)或歐瓦勒(Orval)相似,都是以近似修士們在院內日常飲用啤酒為基礎釀造的,酒精濃度僅有5.5%,是3款啤酒中,最順口、最易飲的修士啤酒。

香氣:酒花賦予橙皮以及洋甘菊般的花香,餅乾般的麥芽口感,以及略帶香蕉氣息的濃郁果香。

口感:乾淨清爽的口感,質地如奶油般細緻順口,帶有焦糖與似香蕉般的果香。
