Abbaye De Lérins Monastery History
Cistercian Abbey of the Immaculate Conception

Abbaye de Lerins is an ancient monastery located on the small island of St. Honorat in the Mediterranean Sea just off the coast of Cannes in the French Riviera. Since the fourth century, thousands of monks have lived here faithfully observing St. Benedict’s rule of Ora et Labora. The current community consists of 20 monks of the Cistercian Order.

The island of St. Honorat has a truly unique terroir with small vineyards planted in rich soil and nurtured by the monks. The fruit of the vine and work of human hands results in extremely limited wines of amazing quality. The monks strive to glorify God through their work and thus take their viticultural vocation seriously.

Vineyards & Winery

The monks of Lerins Abbey continue in the very long winemaking tradition of their Cistercian Order, which was established in Burgundy in the early 12th century. Despite the fact that the island of Saint Honorat is located in the Provence 普羅旺斯 region of France, the monks have eschewed making the typical rosé wines common to the region. Instead, the monks opted to plant grape varieties uncommon to their terroir. The results have proven to be a resounding success as witnessed by a gold medal at the “Best Syrah in the World” competition for their 2005 vintage. The Abbey’s internationally renowned cuvées are championed by the greatest Michelin-starred 米其林星級評鑑肯定的餐廳restaurateurs and are regularly included among the finest wines of France. Furthermore, two cuvées from Lérins Abbey were served to the 26 world leaders present at the 2010 G20 conference in Cannes.

The Lerins Abbey vineyard is located at the center of the island of Saint Honorat and surrounded by oak, cypress and olive trees. The vineyard is only eight hectares in size of which five hectares are dedicated to red grape varietals and three hectares are dedicated to white grape varietals. Red grape varietals include: Mourvedre (0.47 Hectares), Pinot Noir (0.90 Hectares), and Syrah (4.22 Hectares) ; White grape varietals include Clairette (0.80 Hectares), Chardonnay (1.98 Hectares), and Viognier (0.3 Hectares). The vineyard has an ideal location and is planted on soil with a profile of limestone, clay, silt, loam and sand; the maritime influences give the wines their unique personality.

Each year, the grapes are pampered and harvested entirely by hand. Annual production is only around 35,000 bottles. To preserve the environment of the island, the community of the monks of Lérins Abbey have chosen to plant only modest vineyards that respect the land. This means that the brothers do not use any pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilizers.

The monastery also produces a line of five different liqueurs made from fruits and plants grown by the monks on the island.
