Stift Altenburg Monastery and Winery Introduction

Monastery History

The Benedictine Abbey of Altenburg was founded in 1144 in Altenburg, Lower Austria. Beginning in 1983, archaeological excavations uncovered remains of a wall from the 12th century and also a Romanesque cloister dating back to the first half of the 13th century. The monastery has been destroyed and reconstructed several times as the result of numerous attacks throughout its history. Extensive renovations took place after the Thirty Days’ War under the guidance of Abbot Maurus Boxler and Abbot Placidus Much. Renovation was carried out in the Baroque style under the supervision of master architect Josef Munggenast who was assisted by some of Austria’s most distinguished artists and craftsmen of the time.

Under Austrian Emperor Joseph II (1765-1790), who was very anti-monastic, Altenburg Abbey was forbidden to accept new novices. However, unlike most monasteries in Austria, Altenburg succeeded in remaining functional.

Due to the worldwide economic crisis, important possessions of the monastery were sold between World War I and World War II. The monastery was dissolved by the Nazis in 1941 and the abbot was arrested and the monks dispossessed. In 1945, the monastery was occupied by Soviet troops. Under Abbot Maurus Knappek (1947-1968) the buildings were restored and the community re-established.

The Benedictine monks follow the Rule of St. Benedict and live a life of ora et labora (work and prayer). The abbey today has 10 monks with an average age of 60 and they are led by Abbot Thomas Renner, OSB.

Monastery Winery

For more than 250 years Altenburg Abbey has farmed vineyards in the Weinviertel wine region of Austria, specifically in Limberg Manhartsberg. Abbot Placidus Much (1685 -1756) acquired the vineyards in 1755 as part of an expansion of monastic agriculture.

The  unique soils  –  diatomaceous  earth/kieselguhr, primary rock and loess soils – produce the most diverse and distinct white wines  within  a  small  area.  Due  to  the special microclimates, full-bodied reds are also grown here.

The vineyards of Stift Altenburg cover seven hectares. Vineyard plantings include the autochthonous Austrian grape varietals of Grüner Veltliner and Zweigelt, along with Chardonnay, Merlot, and Muskat Ottonel.
