Zema Overview
Zema Estate is a Coonawarra family winery, forged in Australia but based on the Italian traditions and heritage of the Zema family. Since 1982 it has developed a reputation for producing premium quality Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, from hand-pruned vines, with passionate winemaking, and diligent bottle ageing. Everything it does has been influenced by a rich legacy of stories and culture.


Zema History
Zema Estate was established in Coonawarra, South Australia in 1982 by Italian immigrants Demetrio and Francesca Zema with their sons Matt and Nick.

The Zema family came from Calabria in southern Italy to Coonawarra in southern Australia, bringing with them a dream of creating a multi-generational family business of grape-growing and winemaking.

Zema’s core family values are hand-pruning to nurture and foster each individual vine, careful fruit selection to ensure fruit quality, enriching the fruit flavours through selected winemaking techniques, utilizing the best oak barrels available and diligent bottle ageing.

These values ensure that Zema consistently produces high-quality wine, regardless of seasonal fluctuations and vintage highs and lows.

Zema continues to specialise in just two varieties – classic Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.

The Zema family purchased their first 20 acre property in 1982. Eight acres were already planted to Shiraz, and the remaining 12 acres were planted to Cabernet Sauvignon. This was in accordance with the two varieties that had traditionally proven to grow best in the region. The Zemas chose their vineyard because it was located in the heart of the famed Coonawarra terra rossa strip.

Nearly 40 years on that decision to stick with tradition has defined the Zema brand.

Terra Rossa Terroir
Zema believes in the essential quality of the terra rossa soil of Coonawarra – a unique light red clay colored by iron oxide laying over a subsoil structure of free draining limestone with a permanent supply of pure underground water. These conditions provide Zema Estate with consistent yields of high quality fruit. The Zema vineyards are strategically placed through three prime Coonawarra locations and combined with Coonawarra’s maritime breezes from the Southern Ocean, are much the same as the famed Cabernet region of Bordeaux in France. These cooling breezes ensure long, slow ripening and acid retention, delivering wines of intense flavor and structure.

Hand Pruned
The Zema family arrived from Italy in 1953 bringing with them a wealth of traditional vineyard practices and experience. Today the Zema’s continue to touch every vine by hand – shaping, nurturing and adjusting the canopy to achieve a balance of vigor, yield and quality. As Nick says, he still feels his grandfather looking over his shoulder every time he prunes a vine.

Hand Crafted
This handcrafted approach to producing the very best Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz grapes means that winemaking at Zema is also a process of careful nurturing. The Zema family learned from legendary Coonawarra winemaker Ken Ward that the best wines are made by thorough fruit selection and maintaining fastidious attention to detail. The winemaker uses his palate to achieve the signature Zema style: generosity of flavor, outstanding varietal fruit definition, soft, fine grained tannins and persistent finish.

Every wine receives extended bottle maturation of up to four years before release – a rarity in the wine industry today. This traditional approach enables the wine to settle and integrate in the bottle and achieve the right balance of flavors and textures on release.

Aroma: rich dark fruits, ripe red berries, hints of mint, cedar, and purple flowers.

Palate: Medium bodied, with complexity and depth derived from the blending of four grape varieties. Ripe and juicy, filled with raspberries and cherries. The sweet fruit flavors are complemented by gentle oak to provide layers of complexity.

Maturation: 15 months in small French and American oak barrels.

Aroma: rich dark fruits, plums, dark cherries, spicy oak, vanilla and hints of cedar and mint.

Palate: An elegant, medium bodied palate of plum, cherry and raspberry, complemented by cloves, spice and cedary oak for a soft, savory finish.

Zema Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Maturation: 16 months in small French oak barrels.

Aroma: dark fruits: blackberry, mulberry, blackcurrant. Violet floral aromas, subtle oak, cedar, mint nuances.

A benchmark Coonawarra Cabernet featuring a rich, full palate of mulberry and blackcurrant complimented by soft chalky tannins, subtle menthol and well-integrated French oak. Complex and well-balanced with an elegant, silky finish.

Aroma: blackcurrant, elegant oak.

Palate: a vibrant rich wine with attractive fruit and oak flavors. Rich and intense blackberry, mulberry and oak flavors are complemented by elegant tannins for a smooth and lingering finish. An exquisite wine with all the characteristics of a classic Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon.

Aroma: rich dark fruits, hints of vanilla and spicy oak. Perfect convergence of fruit, oak, and floral notes with subtle licorice and mint nuances.

Palate: a vibrant rich wine with attractive fruit and oak flavors. An intense palate of spicy fruit flavors, cedar and cloves are well supported by dark plum and elegant oak. Round tannins with velvety texture and flavor complexity contribute to the long, smooth finish of this wine.
